Gastric Balloon
A balloon is placed endoscopically into the stomach and filled with fluid or air. It typically remains for 6–12 months before removal. No surgical incisions are required.
Sleeve Gastrectomy
Approximately 75–80% of the stomach is removed laparoscopically, permanently reducing stomach volume. This is an operative procedure requiring anaesthesia and hospital admission.
Who Each Suits
Balloon — overweight or mild obesity, when surgery is not yet indicated, or short-term support while preparing for surgery.
Sleeve — moderate to severe obesity with comorbidities, after multidisciplinary evaluation.
Managing Expectations
The two methods are not interchangeable. Balloon results can be lost if lifestyle changes are not sustained. The decision is made after examination, tests, and patient preference discussion.
