Nutrition After Bariatric Surgery
Sustainable nutrition is the most important factor in long-term success after bariatric surgery. The diet progresses gradually and is personalised by the dietitian.
Diet stages (typical)
- Week 1–2: clear and full liquids
- Week 3–4: pureed foods
- Week 5–6: soft foods
- From week 6–8: gradual return to regular textures
Exact timing and food choices are individualised. Carbonated drinks, alcohol and high sugar foods are avoided in the early period.
Protein and hydration
A protein target of approximately 60–80 g/day is recommended for most patients, with at least 1.5–2 litres of fluids spread through the day. Liquids are sipped between meals, not with meals.
Vitamins and minerals
Lifelong supplementation (multivitamin, vitamin D, calcium, vitamin B12, iron and others as needed) is essential. Blood tests at 3, 6 and 12 months and then yearly guide adjustments.
Long-term habits
Mindful eating, small portions, slow chewing, regular physical activity and sleep are essential. Working with a dietitian and the surgical team during the first year improves long-term results.
