Typical Weight Loss
GLP-1 medications produce average total body weight loss in the 10–20% range in trials. Bariatric surgery typically produces 25–35% total body weight loss with greater durability at 5+ years in the average patient.
Metabolic Effects
Both improve type 2 diabetes, blood pressure, and lipid profile. Surgery — especially bypass procedures — shows higher rates of diabetes remission in patients with shorter disease duration.
Durability and Cost
Medication effect depends on continuous use; discontinuation typically leads to weight regain. Surgery is a one-time intervention with lifelong follow-up. Cost models differ significantly by country.
Combined Use
GLP-1 medication can be considered before surgery (selected patients), or after surgery in cases of insufficient response or weight regain. Decisions are individualised within the bariatric team.
