Nutrition

Nutrition Phases After Bariatric Surgery

After bariatric surgery, the digestive system needs time to heal. Nutrition is reintroduced in carefully defined stages so that healing, hydration, and protein intake are protected. Exact timing is individualised by the surgical team and dietitian.

Clear Liquids

In the first days, only clear, sugar-free liquids are allowed: water, unsweetened herbal tea, clear broth. Small, frequent sips are preferred over large volumes at once.

Full Liquids and Purées

Over the following weeks, the diet is expanded to full liquids (skimmed milk, protein shakes, strained soups) and then to puréed foods. Protein intake of roughly 60–80 g per day is a common target, adjusted to the individual.

Soft and Solid Foods

Soft, well-chewed foods are introduced before the patient returns to a balanced solid diet rich in lean protein, vegetables, and complex carbohydrates. Sugary drinks, alcohol, and ultra-processed foods are limited long-term.

Hydration and Supplements

Sipping fluids throughout the day is essential. Multivitamin, iron, calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin B12 supplementation is started according to the procedure type and laboratory results.
